the father has spent time outdoors. the panda exhibit remains closed to the public. margie and her daughter traveled from pittsburgh to stop at the zoo. >> everyone is sad about it. we were looking forward to coming back in the year or so to see how it grew. >> it was mei xiang's distress calls that alerted zookeeper's that something was wrong with the newborn. she has been showing signs of mourning. >> she has been seen cradling an object. we think it was her natural instinct. >> i wondered if they felt sorrow.

>> an official cause of death will not be known for about a week. mei xiang is slowly returning to normal today, eating benbamboo. zoo officials did not discuss trying again in the future. >> thanks so much. six people in montgomery county taken to the hospital after a three-vehicle accident involving a school bus this morning. it happened on maryland avenue and great falls road around 8:30. four children from the bus were hospitalized and one with serious but non-life threatening injuries. two adults from the other car had minor injuries. counselors are in gaithersburg today helping students deal with an accident involving a classmate. 15-year-old jenaya richards was struck by a police cruiser. she was critically injured by is improving. dr. santa upgraded her condition to a fair.

investigators trying to determine what led to a deadly car crash in gaithersburg last night where two cars collided on great seneca highway around 8:00. one woman died and three people injured. part of the highway closed several hours while police pieced together what happened. an emotional weekend for baltimore ravens wide receiver. torrey smith's 19-year-old brother kevin was killed saturday night in a motorcycle crashed in northeastern virginia. torrey made a tough decision to play in the team's game against the patriots. he went on to have a great game, six catches 127 yards and touchdowns. the ravens won the game, 31-30. smith said after the game that he was glad he decided to play. >> i am glad i came back up

>> will continue to follow breaking news from southeast d.c. kendis gibson is at ballou high school where a number of students got sick this morning. >> about an hour ago they got a call to come to ballou high school because severalch pains. so they transported three students from the school. they had eaten apples that they may have gotten from a teacher who does this as an annual thing. she picks apples and brings them into the classroom to a class of

about 24 students. several students 80 apples and several of them reported being sick. three of them had to be transported by ambulance from the high school. you can see of the mass casualty unit is here as well as plenty of paramedics and firefighters. what we are told is happening inside the school at this hour is they are checking the air quality to see if that might of played a role. they don't know exactly how the students might have gotten sick if at all, from the apples. will stay on the scene to give you the latest. kendis gibson reporting for abc 7 news. we will look for an update at 5. an investigation under way into an early-morning house fire in prince george's county inside basements in temple hills around 4:00. if everybody was able to get out ok. but the fire did cause damage to the home. no word on what may have sparked a fire. several people homeless in california after crews tried to continue to work to contain a

wildfire near san diego. at least 30 families and lost their homes so far. there could be more people displaced soon. helicopters have been called in to try to get a better handle on the blaze which has now burned more than 1,000 acres. 80 people been evacuated so far. 7 is on your side with. a new credit card rule that could help stay at home parents. the consumer financial protection bureau is expected to propose a rule in the coming months that would make it easier for people without personal income to qualify for credit cards. currently the law requires credit-card issuers to consider applicants individual income instead of household income and making lander decisions. that could help state and home moms or dad's. contract talks between pepco and its union are at an impasse and union leaders are worried the spurs strike in 27 years could soon happen. last week pepco presented what it called its last best, and final offer to union leaders. union members are scheduled to vote on the offer on wednesday. union leaders are urging them to

reject it. chain trader joe's is recalling pena better linked to salmonella in 18 states. the fda says the stores creamy salted valencia peanut butter is likely the source of the outbreak. the government has not said which states reported illness but people are being warned not to eat peanut butter. it has since been removed from store shelves. mr. day was tough for redskins and fans. they are disappointed this morning after they could not defeat the bengals in the home opener. robert griffin iii took several hits during the game. he had a pretty good game, but the redskins fell short in event, falling to the bengals 38-31. fans are still hopeful. >> i have confidence in rg3. we cannot give up hope. it's embarrassing. >> giving up 30 points.
